A fundraiser for InStill Mindfulness

with support from the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts

Featured at the International Embodiment Conference, this one-person show weaves Dance Improvisation and Theatre to reveal both the struggle and humor on the search for inner peace in a moving and uplifting performance.

Radford dance professor, Katie Wells, shares the hardships and triumphs of her spiritual path in a colorful tapestry of dance, words, props and audience interaction.

From movement poetry to grotesque play, this piece holds satire with compassion in a sincere depiction of the personal and the collective. Various vignettes express our disembodied culture by exposing escapism, uncomfortable emotions, and cultural imbalances, leading to insights for coming back to wholeness.

This performance is a teaching of Embodied Mindfulness – A somatic felt sense of coming home to the whole self… I experienced in this performance that we as human beings took on layers of protection and falsehood. Katie exposes those layers, peeling them off one by one, to come back to a place of self-compassion.

Two features in particular make this performance uniquely suited for a collaboration with InStill Mindfulness:

  • Audience Interaction—In the spirit of evolving from separation into unity, this performance softens the division between audience and performer as participants are guided into embodied presence. Actions such as mindful breathing, rhythmic clapping, and cheering heightens the collective experience.
  • Improvisation—This aspect of the show displays mindfulness moving into expression right before your eyes. Improv requires a deep listening of the body, the music, the environment, and the intention, all in the present moment.

If the show ‘moves’ you to do so, you are welcome to join Katie for an optional ecstatic dance party after the show, from 8:45-9:30 pm.

This is a donation-based event and seating is limited. When registering, a tax-deductible donation to InStill Mindfulness of $20 or more will reserve you a chair, and a donation of less than $20 reserves a seat on the floor. (Bring a cushion if you’d like).

Recommended for ages 14 & up.

Friday is sold out. Limited standing room spaces available at the door.

Katie Wells is a spectacular dancer and performance artist. Dancers like this don’t come around too often—a body that can defy gravity, shoot through space, and float and dig deep in. I also love that Katie is articulate and smart about what she does, where she is going, and what she knows.
